Knitting/Crochet Patterns

We are currently supplying maternity hospitals with our memory boxes and included in our “Remembering”, memory boxes are blankets that parents can choose to either wrap their babies in this blanket or perhaps lay it upon them at the time of burial. They may also keep for themselves this blanket to help serve as a reminder of their babies. It is a comfort to parents to know that the blankets that their baby will be wrapped in, has been hand knit so lovingly by someone. We set up the Cocooned project to knit/crochet these blankets. We always need knitters/crocheters to help us to achieve this.
If you can help please contact us at Feileacain 085-2496464 or email us on knitting@feileacain.ie .

Please find below a selection of patterns that can be used to Knit/Crochet these blankets:

(Please note: If people wish to use their own pattern, that is perfect also.)

All blankets are made with the following Specifications :

1) color – white
2) yarn weight – double knit

Mossy Crochet Blanket

  • This stitch works on a multiple of 2 sts + 1 + another ch to turn. (Your tension may be looser or tighter than mine, so it’s handy to know this.
  • It’s a good idea to make a few extra ch when you begin, and measure the first real row.
  • If you have some ch sitting idle at the end, just undo them and weave ends in as normal). This makes a nicely textured blanket, with a ‘nutty’ feel.
  • I used Eurospun Blockbuster DK and a 4mm hook. Ch 91
  • Foundation Row: (1dc, 1tr) in second ch from hook. * Miss 1 ch, (1dc, 1tr) in next ch.
  • Repeat from * to end. Ch 1 to turn Row 2: Miss first 2 sts. (1dc, 1tr ) in each tr across to end. (totally ignore the dcs).
  • Repeat row 2 till blanket is 24” tall.
  • I added a border to make this a little less boring to look at. This border is ruffled, and it’s supposed to look a bit ‘full’.
  • V st= 1tr, ch 2, 1tr
  • Don’t finish off the final stitch. Ch 1. Working down the side of the blanket, work 2dc in the side of each tr, (around the ‘post’).
  • Work 1dc in the dc below, it looks like a little hole. Work 3dc into each corner st. Work 1dc into each of the foundation chains along the bottom.
  • Up along the other side, again work 2 dc in the side of each tr and 1dc in each dc. Dc into each stitch along the top.
  • I didn’t count how many ch I had in the end. It doesn’t matter at all, once the round of dcs lie flat around.
  • Next Row: Ch 5, (counts as 1tr and 2ch space). Tr in same space. Skip next 2 sts. Work V st in next dc. Repeat around all edges.
  • Join with a sl st in 3 rd of beginning 5ch. Next Row: Sl st in ch2 space. Work (3ch, tr, ch2, 2tr) in same space.
  • In next ch2 space work (2tr, ch2, 2tr). Repeat around, and join in 3rd ch of beginning.

With thanks to Lucy Lyons for supplying us with this pattern and photo’s.

Note: some fudging of the border may be necessary in places, such as at the corners where you may have to make some adjustments. For example, I needed to add a chain between V sts at one corner to get the border to sit right.

Here you can see how the border looks; Vsts on the first row, and then 2tr, ch2, 2tr in the top of the Vs.

Here’s a corner. See how the ch or two that I needed to add isn’t seen at all. The thing is very forgiving.
